Manuscript Submission Guidelines

Hill Street Press is a general interest publisher of trade books. We acquire very few speculative books, either directly from an author or through an author's agent.

Please carefully review the guidelines presented on this page. Our time as well as yours is valuable and we respectfully request that you not submit anything that does not fit our criteria. The information presented on this page is the most current statement of our needs and requirements, and supercedes anything listed in industry databases or references books.

Due to a high number of submissions and our time constraints, any submission not fitting the criteria presented on this page will be disregarded; materials will not be returned to the author.

We always maintain a significant backlog of proposals under review. Accordingly, we cannot guarantee your submission will be reviewed in any specific period of time. If you have simultaneously submitted your material to other publishers, please let us know that at the time of submission.

For our Hill Street Press imprint, we are only interested in nonfiction, adult trade (commercially viable) proposals in history, pop culture, music, gardening, cooking/food, business, sports, African American (and other ethnic studies), gender/women's issues, memoir, biography, and other areas. Generally, books published under the Hill Street Press imprint have something to do with the American South. We do NOT publish adult fiction. Works of a reasonable length (from 35,000 to 125,000 words) stand a far better chance of consideration; do not submit proposals for unreasonably long manuscripts.

We publish children's books under our Broad Street Booksand Graphedia Books imprints. We do not accept unsolicited submissions for traditional children's books at this time. We do accept e-mail (only) submissions for graphic novels (see below).

We also publish several other lines of books including thematic crossword puzzle books. These are developed in-house and we do not accept proposals outside the normal packaging considerations for these series. Please email us if you would like to author/edit a crossword puzzle book for a specific theme, or for a college trivia collection, for which we have not already published or announced a book.

We also offer custom publishing services to corporations, institutions, organizations, and, occasionally, individuals whose needs or proposals do not otherwise fit our criteria. This is typically fee-based, and can be tailored to help meet your needs. We are happy to review your needs and, if we can help, then craft a proposal for your project. Please visit our "Custom Publishing" page for more information.

We strongly discourage hard-copy submissions by mail. Please do not visit our office to submit or discuss your submission without an appointment.

All submissions should be made by email to info@hillstreetpress.com.

We specifically do not publish:

  • poetry books
  • science fiction books
  • romance or erotica books
  • foreign language books
  • academic monographs or textbooks
  • popular psychology or self-help books
  • anthologies edited by third-parties

Please note that your e-mail submission should include the following as an attachment to the e-mail message:

  • A query letter
  • A one-page synopsis
  • An author profile/resume/biography
  • NO MORE THAN one sample chapter (no not submit the entire manuscript unless requested).

    Also please note that:

  • Sample chapter text must be a double-spaced typescript.
  • Let us know at the point of submission if you are represented by an agent.
  • Simultaneous submissions must be acknowledged upon initial presentation.
  • Though we request and encourage e-mail submissions, any materials submitted in hard copy form cannot be returned.
  • Our response to your submission will be made by e-mail.

Thank you for taking the time to review our submission guidelines. We know that finding a publisher for your prospective book can be a frustrating process. If you have a proposal that meets our needs and criteria as set forth herein, we look forward to hearing from you.
