1. Truelove and Homegrown Tomatoes has a tragic beginning and an equally tragic ending. Do you think that the ending was too much for Imo to undergo after the death of her husband Silas?

2. Were the prejudices held by several of the characters offensive or simply realistic in your opinion? Give examples.

3. Imo cares for Royce throughout his heart surgery. When she falls ill shortly thereafter, he does not return the favor or show much concern at all. Discuss the concept of dating in terms of age. Is there much difference in method or attitude?

4. In the deep South, religion has always been an integral part of life. Discuss the function of religion in the town of Euharlee and Loutishie’s preoccupation with the Rapture.

5. Discuss the reasons you believe that Cannon chose the tomato and gardening as major symbols in the novel. Some concepts to keep in mind might be physical and spiritual nourishment and the idea of creating or finding fulfillment within oneself rather than through outside means.

6. Imo was unable to conceive children herself and instead raised her niece and adopted daughter. Explore Imo’s reaction upon learning of Jeanette’s pregnancy.

7. Discuss the function of Martha as Imo’s best friend and the role she plays in Imo’s grieving process.

8. Lou finally comes around and accepts Mr. Mabry’s relationship with Imo. What strategies does Mr. Mabry use to earn her trust and acceptance?

9. Discuss the function of memories in the grieving process. Do they serve as a comfort, do they impede the healing process, or a combination of both?
