the book

Hill Street Press is proud to publish Wise Women: Cartoons of the Woman Suffrage Movement, focusing on the proliferation of political cartoons related to woman suffrage that appeared in the latter final stage of the movement to gain women the right to vote in the U.S. The collection is complemented by a foreword by civil rights pioneer, African American journalist Charlayne Hunter Gault, who is the CNN correspondent in South Africa.

Published primarily in woman suffrage newspapers such as The Suffragist, The Woman's Journal, The Woman's Protest, Suffrage Association, and The Woman Citizen (as well as The New York Tribune, The Crisis, and Puck), these cartoons illustrate the inventiveness of cartoonists in constructing compelling visual arguments for the enfranchisement of women as well as their skill and humor in debunking the claims of the movement's opposition. Captioned to provide historical context, the cartoons are arranged topically to delineate major themes in suffrage and anti-suffrage agitation. This collection of over 140 illustrations-many created by pioneering women cartoonists such as Nina Allender, Lou Rogers, Blanche Ames, Mary Ellen Sigsbee, and Fredrikke Palmer-provides a vivid picture of a key period in the history of U.S feminism.
